For Azucar, the director and I were looking for a way to incorporate tarps since she liked the look of them and how posable they were. The piece centered around our connection to nature and the earth, so I came up with the idea of using them to look like topographical features. I wanted to make mountains out of the tarps, so I landed on these different-sized, mobile mounds.
To be able to bring out the hills and valleys of a rockface with tarps, I wanted to use chicken wire for the main shaping and crumpling. The Technical Director helped me come up with this idea of laminating chicken wire between two sheets of tarp to essentially give the tarp bones. With the process down, we attached the laminated tarps to these tall box frames, positioning the tarps as we went. The result were these larger than the life mounds.
