In Romeo and Juliet, there is mention of pomegranate trees, so the propmaster for the show tasked the apprentices with making pomegranate trees for the set. She showed us the ropes, but for these, it really was about trying things out and playing around till we had what we wanted.
We started by mounting a pvc pipe to a metal baseplate and then built out that central pipe with real branches and other pieces of pvc. We then wrapped that setup in canvas fabric soaked in Mod Podge. Once cured, we painted it with light and dark brown. Finally, we attached fake foliage to all the branches.
For the pomegranates, the propmaster had the great idea of stuffing balloons with foam and cutting the mouth of the balloon to look like the mouth of a pomegranate. So we proceeded to stuff red balloons with foam balls and painted them with some gold highlights. We finished off the trees by hanging as many pomegranates on as we could.
